Increasing Your Vitality
Yoga involves safe and gentle movements that effectively tone and strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and restore vitality. These benefits provide greater control over the body, which can help improve seniors' ability to move around safely. Yoga can also improve breathing, encourage relaxation and help people better cope with discomfort or pain. In addition, practicing yoga can help alleviate specific physical conditions suffered by many seniors, such as the symptoms of arthritis.
Our bodies are filled with energy, but it is blocked within us. We are born bursting with life, yet we grow old depleted of vitality. We begin with the fusion of the life energies of our parents. From the moment of conception, a new pattern of vitality is born and begins to grow. Floating effortlessly in the fluid of the womb, we absorb nutrition, protection, and immunity. We move with the rhythm of our mothers' bodies. Sustenance flows into us through the umbilical cord at the centre of our emerging being.

The way to open the Microcosmic Orbit is by sitting in meditation for a few minutes each morning as you practice the Inner Smile. An essential Taoist technique, described in detail in Taoist Ways to Transform Stress into Vitality, the Inner Smile is a means of connecting visual relaxation and the ability to concentrate. Allow your energy to complete the loop by letting your mind flow along with it. Start in the eyes, and mentally circulate with the energy as it goes down the front through your tongue, throat, chest and navel and then up the tailbone and spine to the head.
The joints can again produce abundant saliva, the elixir of life, which is replete with hormones and which contains a variety of precious substances essential for our vitality. Afflictions like arthritis and rheumatism may be overcome by the loving use of consciousness and Chi breathing instead of by any medicine or worse, surgical operations to replace the brittle joints with steel ones. This form of sacred dance was originally done by women among themselves, as men were not allowed into the life giving circle. Such a dance regenerates the life current and thereby grants a heightened sense of inner power, joyful vitality and self-esteem. It is therefore not surprising that this dance has come back in circles of women who seek to raise their autonomy and self-esteem as well as their joyfulness in life.

Physical medicines, the application of therapies to the body externally, are numerous and are excellent for identifying, treating, and resolving pain and its sources. While beyond the scope of this chapter, therapies such as traditional hydrotherapy, electronic therapies such as ultrasound and electric stimulation in all of its forms, myofascial trigger-point injections, acupuncture, and manual (osseous manipulation) medicine all provide excellent pain relief in and of themselves. Each of these modalities has a long history of use as well as an excellent record of safety and efficacy for pain treatment. Used in various combinations, the previously mentioned therapies are powerful tools for moving patients from states of helpless pain to health and pain-free vitality.
These maxims apply not only to the reducer, but to everyone wanting to maintain a normal, natural weight. We have never had an extra ounce of flesh on our bodies, and we have always made it a rule to get up from the table while still feeling a little bit hungry. As a result, we never feel sluggish and are always full of energy and vitality.
One of the main reasons for joint pain and effusion is an inflammation of the synovial membrane either caused by an autoimmune response in case of rheumatoid arthritis, chronic reactive arthritis, and arthritis in other immunoarthritic rheumatoid disorders or caused by mechanical stress and abrasion of cartilage and or bone in case of osteoarthritis. Treatment of inflammatory joints therefore depends on the type of the underlying disease and is based on systemic drug therapy and local joint treatment. In rheumatoid arthritis, systemic baseline treatment with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppresive drugs is considered mandatory as rheumatoid arthritis is not only a disease of the joints but also of adjacent tendon sheaths and bursae. Generalized forms of rheumatoid arthritis with vasculitis and visceral involvement are common. Pain and joint swelling are often satisfactorily treated by systemic baseline therapy but often single joints remain painful and require additional local...
Many chronic medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, arthritis, depression, and diabetes have nutritional consequences. Loss of body water, lean body mass, and bone mass decline of the immune response over- and underweight malnutrition and declining taste, smell, and thirst are among the problems that affect physical strength, functional ability, and vitality. At times, specialized diets or medical nutrition therapy are needed these are
Experimental data and morphological studies on radiation effects to diarthrodial tissues, especially articular cartilage and subchondral bone are rare and sometimes contradictory. Intra-articular injection of 15 MBq of Y-90 in rabbit knee joints was reported to cause both focal clustering of chondrocytes and fibrillation of the collagenous matrix of the articular cartilage (11). Similar results with focal damage of chondrocytes and surrounding extracellular matrix were observed in eight patients with rheumatoid arthritis after treatment of the knee joint with 185 MBq of Y-90 (52). Contradictory results with no microscopic signs of cartilage degeneration were found after application of 150 MBq of Y-90 into knee joints of dogs (12) and 370 MBq of gold-198 (Au-198) in adult rats (53). Ongoing studies concerning the effects of Y-90 on vitality and metabolism of bovine articular cartilage chondrocytes in a three-dimensional alginate culture system show that chondrocytes survive even the...
The average human life span in the industrialized countries has increased from 40-45 years to nearly 75 years over the past cen-tury.1 This is due to improved living standards, including better nutrition, medical care, and sanitation. The maximum human life span is thought to be 120 years. Although our genetic potential should allow most people to live to 100 and beyond, few survive to 100 and not many make it to 90. Moreover, living longer does not necessarily mean living better. Degenerative disease - arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, cataracts - plague the elderly. There is little sense in striving to extend maximum life span until ways can be found to live out our present-day life span in reasonably good health, with physical and mental vitality. A goal of preventive nutrition is to find ways to compress illness and the degenerative process of aging into a short period preceding death. Rather than dreaming about living to 200, the aim should be to live past 100 and do so in...
The second part describes what raw food therapy is all about, the advantages for our health, of course, but also for our well-being, beauty, and vitality, to lose weight, to have a perfect figure, to be the best in sports, for the sake of planetary environmentalism, or simply to gain time and money
In 6th Century Da Mo (Boddidharma), arrived at Shaolin temple from India. Seeing that the monks were poorly and feeble he sat in contemplation for nine years facing a wall. (Long periods in lotus posture cause great pa in in the legs but eventually the body creates its own anaesthetic to numb the pain, and when the pain is 'forgotten' the body is forgotten then the mind is free and the spirit can soar.) Da Mo then introduced his 'Marrow brain washing' and 'Muscle tendon changing' classics to the monks whose vitality greatly improved and so Buddhist Qigong was born. Buddhist Qigong stresses spiritual development right intentions, right speech, right livelihood etc. Buddhism promotes simplicity, mindfulness, and freedom from attachment and iilustrates the principle of cause and effect. The ultimate goal is toattain 'Nirvana' (cessation of passion, aggression, and ignorance), achieved through 'emptiness' in meditation.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key ) is an ancient Buddhist practice of manual healing therapy that was rediscovered in Japan by Mikao Usui in the mid 1800s. It has become increasingly popular in the United States during the past few decades and is used for treating heart attacks, emphysema, hemorrhoids, prostate problems, varicose veins, hiccups, nosebleeds, and various mental and emotional problems. It is based on the belief that life is dependent on a universal, nonphysical energy. Because health requires a sustained and balanced flow of this energy throughout the body, disturbances in that flow result in physical, emotional, and mental illnesses. The Reiki practitioner attempts to correct life energy imbalances and blockages by gently resting his or her hands in specific ways on 12 standard sites throughout the body. The practitioner generally begins with the head and spends a few minutes at each site, with a complete session taking an hour or more. In some cases, the practitioner will...
Saturn is the significator of old age, the God of time, who brings on all the degenerative processes of aging, the failure of our faculties and our powers. As such a badly placed Saturn causes premature aging. Saturn takes away our vitality, on a physical or on a mental level. He causes depression, melancholy, self-pity and gives rise to worry, fear and anxiety.
Saturn types are the most disease prone of the planetary types. They often have low vitality and poor endurance. They run cold in terms of both temperature and temperament and have poor digestion and poor circulation. They tend towards constipation and to the accumulation of waste materials in the body. When Saturn is strongly afflicted, they are often chronically ill and may die young. They are prone to degenerative diseases like arthritis or nervous system disorders. However, a strong Saturn does give good longevity and the ability to survive disease and hardship.
Much of our Qigong and Taiji practice and probably the Shaolin as well, though my knowledge of Shaolin is more slanted to the religious side, is centred upon another Taoist concept, that of Xiu Ming, cultivation of life energy . It doesn't end there though. As well as being healthy we want to be happy. All beings do. Forsome, that pursuit of happiness results in a frantic accumulation of security or material comforts and of course physical well being is an important factor in a happy individual. But that's just the first step. To be truly happy and healthy we also need a positive interaction with the outside world. Feeling that we're making a useful contribution to the world, that we share common goals with those we respect or have affection for, this is another important element of our contentment. Happy people tend to be healthy. Body and mind cannot be divorced from one another.
After oxygen, nothing else consumed by man approaches the crucial importance of water in providing the foundations for health and vitality. All physiological systems, without exception, have a primal dependence upon adequate hydration for their optimal assimilation of nutrients, purification of toxins and proper functioning. Howell takes care to delineate the fact that, Catalysts are only inert substances. They possess none of the life energy we find in enzymes. For instance, enzymes give off a kind of radiation when they work. This is not true of catalysts. (Healthview Newsletter, 1979) A direct relationship exists between tissue enzyme levels and vitality, being highest in the young and the healthy, and almost nonexistent in the sick and the aged, so much so that Howell has written When it gets to the point that you cannot make certain enzymes, then your life ends. When foods deprived of their natural enzymes through cooking arrive in the digestive tract, the body immediately...
I do not know how much movement, if any you have in your shoulder, so I would first recommend you gently try to rotate both shoulders forward and backwards in a manner similar to shrugging your shoulders. Try to keep the neck and shoulders relaxed while doing this, not trying to make big progress as this will just make the muscles tense. Once this feels comfortable, you can then try the Balancing Gong exercises, 'Supporting the Sky' and 'Big Bear Stretches', which are found in my book and video, Qigong for Health & Vitality. With best wishes, Michael Tse
The evaluation of sleep quality relies on the subjective perception of sleep. Several scales have been developed to assess overall sleep quality. Some of these scales have been validated. y The structured interview provides insight into several domains of sleep quality. How well does the patient sleep Does the patient feel that sleep is troubled or insufficient Good sleep satisfies several criteria (1) it is sufficient-providing for adequate alertness and a feeling of vitality during the day, (2) it is efficient--easily initiated, continuously maintained, and not excessively prolonged, and (3) it is convenient-occurring during a period of time when the patient would not need or prefer to be awake, which is usually at night but may vary for those with other life demands, such as a nighttime job.
Effects According to traditional Indian medicine, it is said to reduce stress and anxiety and to improve vitality, learning, and memory. It has been used to treat arthritis and help heal broken bones, and may inhibit cancer, as well. There have been few studies, but those conducted have yielded encouraging results it enhanced mood and improved hemoglobin and blood plasma protein levels in a 1993 study, was shown to alleviate withdrawal symptoms in morphine addiction in a 1995 study, and showed positive results for patients with anxiety neurosis in a 1997 study.
Within two months, even without appropriate antibiotic treatment (67,69,111). Elderly patients are more prone to severe infections and death as are individuals with underlying medical conditions (e.g., immunosuppressive treatment, malignancies) or with delayed specific antibiotic treatment (60,92,106,112). A severe course of HGA can present as a septic or toxic-shock-like syndrome, myositis, rhabdomyolysis, myocarditis, or neurological involvement, such as brachial plexopathy or demyelinating polyneuropathy (38,41,109,113-116). Life-threatening complications were described in 7 (30 of 457) of patients in 2001-2002 (59), including acute respiratory distress syndrome (three patients), disseminated intravascular coagulation (one patient), renal failure (three patients), and others. The long-term outcome for HGA is usually favorable, showing no differences in physical functioning, general health, and vitality in one case-controlled study however, HGA patients showed lower scores for pain...
