Preface xiii

In the conception of this book, we envisaged a text presented in a very accessible format covering the major surgical specialties. We have included surgical procedures - something that is lacking in most textbooks. Also included are radiographs of numerous conditions to aid in consolidating learning. The drawings help to visualise difficult concepts, e.g. suturing, amputations.

This book describes 113 common surgical conditions, 33 practical surgical procedures, and has over 30 illustrations. Sections describing surgical conditions have been subdivided into 11 structured subheadings based on the Rapid Series Mnemonic in list 1. The surgical procedures follow the six subheadings in list 2. We hope that this textbook will consolidate your personal and ward-based learning and that you will enjoy reading it.

This work would not have been possible without the invaluable unwavering support and assistance of Professor Brian Davidson MD, FRCS. We would like to thank our consultants at the Royal Free Hospital for their advice and help in reviewing our work: Miss C. Davey, FRCOPhth; Mr T. Davidson, ChM MRCP FRCS; Mr N. Garlick, FRCS (Orth); Dr J. Hinton, MRCP, FRCR; Mr C. Shieff, MBChB FRCS.

We would also like to thank the Department of Radiology for granting us access to use the radiographs of the Royal Free Hospital Radiology Library. Finally, we would like to acknowledge those who have been an inspiration to us at the Royal Free Hospital, especially Mr J. Kirk and Mr J. Norton.
