From Alcoholism to Enlightenment

I've come from alcoholism to, like Master Lin says, self-enlightenment. And, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm self-enlightened, but I know I am a much better person now. And, I wasn't looking to do this. I was not looking for self-enlightenment. I was not looking to change my character. I was not looking to quit drinking. I was not looking to quit eating fatty foods. I was not looking for any of that. All of that was just kind of thrust upon me by doing the Qigong. The more Qigong I did the more I changed. It's like Master Chunyi Lin says Level One Spring Forest Qigong is kind of like self-help, Level Two is about helping others to heal, Level Three is about self-enlightenment, and Level Four is about enlightening others. And, it takes time. It happens over time and over time it just clicks and keeps clicking.

Why should I practice Yoga

Yoga provides a balanced and wholesome approach to achieving good physical and mental health. To begin with, yoga is easier on your body than many other fitness activities, such as high-impact aerobics. Also, unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga addresses all aspects of your health and well-being. Breathing exercises can help you learn to breathe more efficiently. Meditation can clear your mind and help you stay calm. Yoga poses can provide many physical benefits, such as increasing your flexibility and improving your circulation.

Keeping up appearances

Some people will refer to these points by numbers but actually you should try to remember their names and what the names mean. This will tell you the essence of the kind of energy that is generated by these points. Below are the points you will use in your practise of Healthy Living Gong and also in meditation. These points are very common and will be used in many of the Qigong forms that I teach.

Chapter The Benefits of Qigong Practice

Problem-solving via meditation Meditation can help you to solve your problems. You may find, for instance, that when you are at work and need to make a difficult decision you just do not know what to do. Meditation can help you find the best answer, because it enables you to cast off all the stress and pressure of the situation so that your mind has more room to move and you can see the problem more clearly. We often panic, especially if we have lost something, and because we are too close to' the question we cannot see the answer. Stay away and forget it then the solution will come naturally.

Secret of the Inner Smile

Inner Smile Front Line

Once you've created a quiet, calming external atmosphere you must establish that same quiet and calm within yourself. If the room is conducive to meditating, but your jaw clenched, your neck stiff, shoulders tense, your back stiff, your stomach upset, you will not be able to circulate the chi energy and complete the microcosmic orbit. With practice the entire smiling meditation can be done in just minutes, although at first it may take you longer to really feel the smile. When you end the meditation you do not want to have energy circulating around in the higher centers such as the head or the heart. The best place for energy storage in the body is the area of the navel, since it can easily handle the increased body heat. Most ill side effects of meditation are caused by excess energy in the head, but this is easily avoidable. (See Chapter on Preventing Side Effects.) Although the inner smile is used primarily to help you to relax prior to practicing the microcosmic orbit, it is...

Importance of the Microcosmic Orbit

The way to open the Microcosmic Orbit is by sitting in meditation for a few minutes each morning as you practice the Inner Smile. An essential Taoist technique, described in detail in Taoist Ways to Transform Stress into Vitality, the Inner Smile is a means of connecting visual relaxation and the ability to concentrate. Allow your energy to complete the loop by letting your mind flow along with it. Start in the eyes, and mentally circulate with the energy as it goes down the front through your tongue, throat, chest and navel and then up the tailbone and spine to the head.

Dancing and Bone Chi Kung

That is why dancing and shaking, (apart from being a blessing for the lymph system), like in many ancient forms of dance, is so good for our joints. As we experience joy and firmly touch the earth she then responds by sending her Chi upward into our bodies. We let the bones dance. The more inward we dance, as a form of energy meditation, the deeper will be the effect. There is evidence that Chi Kung in its earliest stages was a slow dance which was done as its healing qualities were realized. The Nei Kung practice of the Bone Marrow Nei Kung, by gentle Chi pressure and infusing the bones with Chi, serves to regenerate them by renewing the blood. It requires a form of deep sensing meditation which can only be realized in a state of deep relaxation. Then even the hardest elements in our body yield to the force of the gentle, and what was dying comes to life again, as the stone yields to the water. To move the bones from within and from without is very good. The reason why Taoist...

Chen Hunyuan Tai Ji Quan

The principles of Taiji needs Yin and Yang to balance. It does not matter which family's style of Taijiquan you do Chen, Yang, Wu, Woo or Sun. All of them cover Yin and Yang and are good Taijiquan. Traditional Chinese martial arts all cover Yin and Yang - soft and hard, internal and external training, movement and meditation. Many of today's martial artists only consider fighting, how to be aggressive and tough. Going this way will not make you healthy. Eventually you will have problems with your joints, arthritis, heart problems and maybe even cancer. Some miss the Yin and others miss the Yang. How can this be healthy and balanced and bring you to a high level of martial art

Thirty Six Exercises Of Ba Tao Chi Kung

The thirty six exercises of Tien Tao Chi Kung are mostly of the Ba Tao (forced) meditation division. They will nourish and awaken the chi energy in a short period of time. With the use of mental control, muscular force, and respiratory techniques they achieve the same result that would take much longer with natural meditation. When one takes a shorter route the risks are usually higher and such are the risks of forced meditation. Too much force may injure the internal organs when unnatural pressure is created. Usually, the adverse effects are not immediately visible, but remain latent in the body. Adverse effects can be avoided by remembering the following principles. 6. When concluding every session of meditation collect the energy at the lower dan tien center. This may be done by massaging the area in a circular motion 36 times clockwise and 36 times counter-clockwise. Any of the internal organs may be damaged by creating excess muscular and respiratory pressure. The severe effect...

Pharmacologic Highlights

Teach the patient assistive techniques to manage joint pain, such as meditation, biofeedback, and distraction. When the pain is reduced and mobility improves, encourage the patient to assume more responsibility for self-care. Recommend a firm mattress or bed board for lumbar and sacral spine pain. Apply moist heat pads to relieve hip pain, and assist with gentle range-of-motion exercises. A total or partial hip replacement requires limited joint movement and restricted weight-bearing, depending on the type of prosthesis and surgical approach. Preventing dislocation of the hip prosthesis is extremely important. Keep the patient from lying on the affected side. Place three pillows between the patient's legs while she or he is sleeping and when you turn the patient. Avoid hip flexion. Keep the cradle boot in place, except for a brief period during a bath. Once the patient is allowed up, instruct her or him not to cross the legs while sitting and to avoid wearing shoes and stockings or...

Brief History of Taoism and Healing Arts

For many centuries, meditation and special exercises forms have been used by the Ancient Chinese, Hindus, Arabs, Jews and Christians as a means of improving the human mind and body. In China, the Taoists called it Chi Kung, or Cultivation of Energies. According to Taoist classics, Tu Hse, who lived about 8,000 years ago, was the successor to many great pre-historical sages. He was the great Taoist sage who began the use of the eight kua of the I Ching such as the great power of observation and the power of simplifying obscure masses of material. This resulted in a most perfect yogic and meditational form, which incorporated the insights of Tao philosophy. Perhaps it is more than a coincidence that the Indian practice today of Kundalini Yoga is somewhat similar to the Taoist Chi Kung. More than 2,000 years ago, the Indian Master Bodhidharma traveled to China. There he meditated for nine years facing a wall at Shao Lin Temple. He established a school, which incorporated the Indian...

Dayan Qigong

Qigong translated means 'energy skill exercise'. It consists of movement and meditation. Moving the body you can help the qi to flow, and by keeping still you can gather qi. Thus the method follows the principal of yin and yang to develop the qi. Michael's teachings include Qigong forms, meditation, the principles of Chinese medicine (five elements), the I Ching and Fung Shui.

Permanent Weight Control

Dean Ornish, founder and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, is famous for his 17-year study on reversing heart disease through lifestyle changes alone. One interesting result of the study (which uses a plant-based diet, moderate exercise, and meditation) was that the participants who followed his program also lost an average of 22 pounds in the first year, although the focus of the study was not weight loss. Equally significant, the patients who participated in the program were showing even more improvement after four years.

Exercise Sequence to Encourage Grace

Exercise Sequence

Meditation for inner strength Let your breath flow freely and calmly. Have your eyes just 1 10 open and direct your gaze to the tip of your nose. Dive deeply into the highest level of being. Melt into your higher self, and allow a feeling of utter simplicity to exist in your centre, letting go of all expectation. This meditation neutralises negativity, and is comforting and centring. It enables you to enter into the reality of your godhead.

Classification of CAM

Meditation, prayer, music therapy (previously cognitive behavior, biofeedback) Among patients with peripheral neuropathy, CAM users report using magnets and acupuncture (30 each), herbal remedies (22 ) and chiropractic (22 ) 14 . In this study, CAM use was associated with the presence of diabetic neuropathy and burning pain. Chiropractic and massage are frequently used by patients with chronic low back pain 15 . In a questionnaire study of 170 chronic pain patients attending a pain clinic in Montreal, 96 (56 ) had used a CAM modality in the past month, of which the most common were nutritional supplements (34 ), massage (11 ) and meditation (7 ) (Figure 13.1) 16 .

Conclusions and Future Directions

In sum, it is clear there is a paucity of high-quality empirical investigations supporting definitive conclusions regarding the efficacy of CAM therapies for pediatric pain. However, the studies to date have produced suggestive findings regarding several modalities that clinical researchers may use as guidance in conducting better-designed investigations. There remain a number of CAM interventions for pediatric pain, including movement therapies (yoga), creative arts interventions (art or dance therapy), meditation, aromatherapy, spiritual approaches, homeopathy, and folk remedies, for which no published, controlled studies exist and which were therefore not included in this review. One special group of CAM interventions often used in tertiary pediatric pain clinics but not studied systematically in children includes energy healing, such as Reiki and other therapies that purport to manipulate energy biofields within and around the human body, or bioelectromagnetic-based therapies...

What Capricorn Needs to Learn

She is frightened of being unloved, alone, ill, and poor. She may fear life itself, with its risks and emotional demands. At times she may be afraid to love, for she has trouble letting go in the face of uncontrollable feeling without the guarantee of just return. The following technique, color meditation, is something you can test yourself, experiencing its method and results. As presented in the next few pages, color meditation is an outstanding way for you to release any negative emotion, specifically fear.

Meditation Meditation is defined as any activity that calms the mind and keeps it focused in the present moment. This means that the individual is neither reacting to things that have happened in the past nor making plans for the future. There are many forms of meditation but they can be divided into two basic types. 1. Concentrative meditation involves focusing on the breath, an image, or a sound (mantra) so that the mind becomes still and aware. Zen meditation is usually begun by counting breaths and progresses from simply being aware of the breath to more advanced techniques. The well-known transcendental meditation involves the use of a unique meaningless sound, the mantra. 2. Mindfulness meditation involves opening the mind to thoughts, feelings, and images and allowing them to float through without reacting Successful meditation induces a state of deep relaxation. Studies have shown that this relaxation is associated with a lower heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate...

Ayurvedic medicine

Ayurvedic medicine A complementary, holistic approach to health based on ancient Hindu texts. It is traced back to the sages of ancient India. These rishis are believed to have discovered the principles of Ayurveda during deep meditation. These principles were codified in the Vedas (knowledge) that form the religious texts of Hinduism. The Atharva-Veda is the source of Ayurveda. The basis of

Classification Excess The Multiplicity Of Pain And Suffering

The multidimensional quality of pain and suffering -situated within cultures, as well as within nervous systems - implies a need to resist the temptation to eliminate from research and from treatment all the messy local variations that come with living in societies. Low back pain is simply not the same experience in the USA as it is in Japan. In one study, Japanese patients proved significantly less impaired in psychological, social, vocational, and avocational function.64 Research comparing ten American cancer patients with ten cancer patients from India found significant differences in quality of life and in the meaning of the pain experience.65 Indian patients, who sought medical assistance only after their pain became intolerable, saw their suffering as the fulfillment of a higher good,'' whereas American patients interpreted their own suffering as a form of punishment.'' The authors of a review article focusing on numerous cross-cultural investigations conclude that more such...

Holding Up pattern of tension

I doubt that there is any panacea that could cure this condition once and for all, since enlightenment, which can be understood as freedom from ego, is not a state but a process. Qi Dao offers you some methods that allow shifting from one way of being to another without fighting against the old pattern. If it used to serve you as your survival mechanism, who knows when it may came in handy once again Integrating all potentially usable aspects of your being can be done without developing your identity on the basis of the beliefs forming any rigid pattern of holding tension.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain management

Specific techniques include skills of self-regulation such as relaxation and mindfulness meditation, biofeedback, attentional control, and hypnosis, graded exposure to fear-related stimuli, cognitive therapy focused on examining the veracity of belief, control of catastrophic thinking, problem solving and habit reversal. The targets of CBT can be specific, for example in reducing the frequency of headache, reducing the number of times one sleeps in the daytime, or increasing the length of time one engages in meaningful social exchange. The targets can also be general, for example, in increasing the subjective sense of global well-being, or reducing the subjective sense of struggling with one's values.

Living In The Moment

Yoga's physical and mental benefits for autoimmunity were illustrated by a small study published in the medical journal Alternative Therapies. Twenty women with rheumatoid arthritis enrolled in the Study. Half the women did nothing. The other half took a 1 o -week hatha yoga course. Those women mctwith an instructor three times a week for 75 minutes. Each class began with 5 minutes of breathing exercises, moved through a series of traditional asanas, and ended with a short meditation. After 10 weeks, the women in the yoga group not only reported better balance and functioning and less pain but also cxpcricnccd less depression than those in the control group. Rubin sees hcryoga practice as a means to keep her well and healthy whether it's her mind or her body or both that need attention. My practice of meditation and yoga is a place where I get clear and heal, she says. Just stopping in the midst of a practice to breathe and focus gets to the real part of what is happening for me. Yoga...

Iquan Form

Wushu Posture Form

The source of Daoism lies within the Yi jing (Scripture of Change),dating back over 3,000 years. Centuries later, Daoist 'sage' Laozi (b.604 B.C.) authored the influential Dao De Jing which emphasises balance, harmony with nature, and cultivation of stillness (calm heart and mind), and morality, as well as discussing Dantian breathing. Health and longevity is the main goal of Daoist Qigong. The path involves character training and refinement of Qi into jure spirit. Through meditation ego is dissolved, the mind returns to 'nothing', ultimately merging with the Void, or Dao (becoming one with the universe). In 6th Century Da Mo (Boddidharma), arrived at Shaolin temple from India. Seeing that the monks were poorly and feeble he sat in contemplation for nine years facing a wall. (Long periods in lotus posture cause great pa in in the legs but eventually the body creates its own anaesthetic to numb the pain, and when the pain is 'forgotten' the body is forgotten then the mind is free and...

My Way to Qigong

Like most people there, I listened with my eyes closed. He asked us to listen to his words without hearing them, without paying any attention. That meant that we were to use his words and sound as music to go deep into the meditation. Surrender the body. Let the Qi flow in the body. Not try to control the energy. Just allow nature to nurture and heal our bodies. No matter what kind of Qi reactions happened in the body, just take it easy. Don't analyze it. Just let it be. That's what the master told us to do.

Understanding Qigong

Some Qigong movements are very simple. Others are very complicated and difficult to learn. If you want to learn difficult and complicated movements, techniques and meditations then that is a good choice for you. If you've found a style of Qigong that you enjoy and works for you I encourage you to stay with it. But, in my experience the difficult Qigong techniques are not more effective, just more difficult. I think simple is much better. THERE ARE FOUR PARTS to balancing your Qi through Qigong breathing, the postures or movements of your body, your mind & meditation, and the sounds. To reach this goal you need to learn and practice Qigong movements and meditations that are designed to balance all of the body's energy at the same time. I will show you a few of these simple, yet very powerful exercises later in this book. Qigong Meditation With the finger growing game you've just experienced the power of your conscious mind. What about the other part of your mind, the part that some...

Zhanzhuang Pile Standing

If you can meditate for three to five minutes in the beginning, you are doing very well. You may find that your legs tremble. This is the body's way of releasing negative energy and opening the channels for stronger Qi. When you are tired, move to a higher stance and rest there for a while. Then go lower and stay for as long as you can before coming up again. Saturn

He can give complete detachment and independence. He is the one who stands alone and goes beyond the limitations of the masses. He shows the way of transcendence, though necessarily difficult, whereby all limitations can be overcome by resorting to our true and unlimited Self. In this respect the power of Shiva, the lord of the yogis, the god of death and transcendence may work through Saturn.

Question

Swimming Dragon Qigong

Why do we need to meditation after we practise Qigong The way we store our Qi is through meditation. Movement is Yang and active, therefore, we need something Yin and still to balance it. Only through stillness can the Qi gather and be stored. There are many types of Qigong meditation and so it should not be difficult to find one which suits you. You can try either standing or sitting on a chair or even the lotus position, sitting on a floor or cushion. Many people think only of doing the Qigong movements and forget their meditation. So they have worked very hard, but the money they put in their pocket is gone when they need it, having slipped through the hole in their pocket because they have not stored their Qi through meditation. Yang Jing Hao. On Yang Jing Hao said, the principle of Buddhism is very simple. Buddhism means enlightenment, to understand what will happen and what has happened. Shakyamuni is Buddha, he found out the true meaning of life and what happens outside of our...

Stress and Illness

During the last two or three decades of teh twentieth century, applied researchers attempted to develop intervention strategies aimed at controlling the body's physiological responses to stress. This work has suggested that a number of stress management strategies can actually attenuate physiological responsivity. Most strategies teach the individual some form of relaxation (such as deep muscle relaxation, biofeedback, hypnosis, or meditation), and most of this work has focused on populations already diagnosed with a stress-related disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, or ulcer. The tech-

The Nature Of Pain

The nature of pain is highly subjective. Pain has both sensory (somatic) and psychological (affective) components. One person may feel pain in response to noxious stimuli, while another person may disregard the stimuli. The affective (psychological) aspects of pain play a critical role in pain perception. A patient under external stress or other significant psychological problems often cannot handle the additional stress of pain. Anxiety exacerbates the perception of pain. Pain in turn exacerbates anxiety, decreases the comfort of the patient, and results in disturbances in sleeping, eating, and locomotion, creating a cycle of related medical problems. The drugs described in this chapter are used to interrupt such a cycle. The nonopioid analgesics act to decrease the generation of the mediators of pain at the site of tissue damage, although several of the drugs also have some effects within the central nervous system (CNS). The opi-oid analgesics are unique in that they not only block...

Research

Astin80 I reviewed evidence from multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews involving MT for a number of different pain states and his conclusion was that mindful therapies may be an appropriate adjunctive treatment for chronic low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tension headaches, postoperative pain, and pain during invasive medical procedures. Multiple MT were evaluated, including relaxation, meditation, imagery, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and hypnosis. It was recommended that further research is needed, including comparisons of MT to credible shams and conventional medical therapies, comparisons of the different therapies with each other, and evaluations of which of the individual therapies are most effective for each of the individual pain diagnoses. Although it is difficult to create credible placebo conditions, it is important for future research to examine the relative contribution of nonspecific placebo factors in the...

Exercise

Tai chi, with its focus on breathing and flowing gestures, is often described as meditation in motion (12). It emerged sometime between the 1300s and the 1600s in China. Some say it was developed by monks, others by a retired general. They agree its ancient roots are in the martial arts, but tai chi movements are never aggressive. They are based on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long, graceful gesture. The sequences have poetic names, such as waving hand in the cloud or pushing the mountain, and can be quite beautiful to an observer (13). It is widely thought that mind-body alternatives, such as tai chi and meditation, that focus on psychological as well as physical function could be beneficial when used with conventional medications. However, scientific investigation of the therapeutic values of tai chi is still lacking.

The Dog Woman

Meditation, relaxation, and plenty of peace and quiet are her solutions to achieving serenity. Self-sacrifice is her lifeblood, and she is seldom happy unless giving her time and energy to care for others or a worthy cause. Her need to assist and to protect humanity stems from the deep feelings of unworthiness that haunt her soul.

Fibromyalgia

Tens Unit Placement Neck Pain

Modifying behavior often involves emphasis on activities that help to lessen symptoms. Patients often must be reminded that caffeine, especially near bedtime, may worsen an already poor sleep pattern. Helping patients to reframe their situation into one with less victimization, along with other cognitive therapy interventions, can also be useful. Directing the patient toward self-management of symptoms through relaxation training, meditation, or electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback can help control symptoms while shifting the locus of control back to the patient.

Asthma

One well known effect of THC is to life the spirit, or make you high. Cannabis users in Jamaica praise ganja's benefits for meditation, concentration, consciousness-raising and promoting a state of well being and self assertiveness.5 This kind of attitude adjustment, along with a healthier appetite and better rest, often represents the difference between feeling like you are dying of AIDS or cancer and feeling like you are living with AIDS or cancer. Cannabis also eases small pains and some big ones and helps senior citizens live with aches and pains like arthritis, insomnia and debilitating infirmities, and enjoy life in greater dignity and comfort. Legend has it, and medical evidence indicates, that cannabis is the best overall treatment for dementia, senility, and maybe Alzheimer's disease, for long-term memory gain and hundreds of other benefits. U.S. statistics of the 1970s indicated
