I've come from alcoholism to, like Master Lin says, self-enlightenment. And, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm self-enlightened, but I know I am a much better person now. If the room is conducive to meditating, but your jaw clenched, your neck stiff, shoulders tense, your back stiff, your stomach upset, you will not be able to circulate the chi energy and complete the microcosmic orbit. The way to open the Microcosmic Orbit is by sitting in meditation for a few minutes each morning as you practice the Inner Smile. Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain management

Specific techniques include skills of self-regulation such as relaxation and mindfulness meditation, biofeedback, attentional control, and hypnosis, graded exposure to fear-related stimuli, cognitive therapy focused on examining the veracity of belief, control of catastrophic thinking, problem solving and habit reversal. The targets of CBT can be specific, for example in reducing the frequency of headache, reducing the number of times one sleeps in the daytime, or increasing the length of time one engages in meaningful social exchange. The targets can also be general, for example, in increasing the subjective sense of global well-being, or reducing the subjective sense of struggling with one's values.

My Way to Qigong

Like most people there, I listened with my eyes closed. He asked us to listen to his words without hearing them, without paying any attention. That meant that we were to use his words and sound as music to go deep into the meditation. Surrender the body. Let the Qi flow in the body. Not try to control the energy. Just allow nature to nurture and heal our bodies. No matter what kind of Qi reactions happened in the body, just take it easy. Don't analyze it. Just let it be. That's what the master told us to do.

Understanding Qigong

Some Qigong movements are very simple. Others are very complicated and difficult to learn. The nature of pain is highly subjective. Pain has both sensory (somatic) and psychological (affective) components. One person may feel pain in response to noxious stimuli, while another person may disregard the stimuli. The affective (psychological) aspects of pain play a critical role in pain perception. A patient under external stress or other significant psychological problems often cannot handle the additional stress of pain. Anxiety exacerbates the perception of pain. Pain in turn exacerbates anxiety, decreases the comfort of the patient, and results in disturbances in sleeping, eating, and locomotion, creating a cycle of related medical problems. The drugs described in this chapter are used to interrupt such a cycle. The nonopioid analgesics act to decrease the generation of the mediators of pain at the site of tissue damage, although several of the drugs also have some effects within the central nervous system (CNS). Tai chi, with its focus on breathing and flowing gestures, is often described as meditation in motion (12). It emerged sometime between the 1300s and the 1600s in China. Some say it was developed by monks, others by a retired general. They agree its ancient roots are in the martial arts, but tai chi movements are never aggressive. They are based on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long, graceful gesture. The sequences have poetic names, such as waving hand in the cloud or pushing the mountain, and can be quite beautiful to an observer (13). It is widely thought that mind-body alternatives, such as tai chi and meditation, that focus on psychological as well as physical function could be beneficial when used with conventional medications. However, scientific investigation of the therapeutic values of tai chi is still lacking.
