Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus

Carpet Tack Sign Dle

Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) is a distinct entity with specific clinical and serologic features that was first described by Gilliam in 1977 (Gilliam, 1977), with expanded discussion in 1979 (Sontheimer et al., 1979) and 1982 (Gilliam Figure 2. Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE). Annular, polycyclic lesions with erythematous borders and central hypo-pigmentation on the back. Figure 2. Chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus The group of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE) includes several entities, such as discoid LE (DLE) and the more rare subtypes LE profundus (LEP) and chilblain LE (CHLE). 2.3.1. Discoid lupus erythematosus Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is the most common subtype of the chronic cutaneous variants of LE and may present as a localized or disseminated form. The localized form,...

MRL Mouse

Mrl Mouse Lupus Lymphadenopathy

Fas-Defect MRL Mice as a Model of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus MRL mice were originally developed by Murphy and Roths at Jackson Laboratories (Murphy and Roths 1978). Two substrains of MRL mice were developed the MRL lpr and the MRL n mouse. These substrains were derived mainly from the LG J strain with contributions from AKR J, C3H Di, and C57BL 6J mouse strains. The spontaneous autosomal recessive mutation Ipr (lymphoproliferation) was first observed at the 12th generation of inbreeding. The lupus-like syndrome is earlier in onset and more acute in females than in males. Virgin female MRL lpr mice have a 50 mortality rate at 6 months of age, whereas virgin female MRL n mice have a 50 mortality rate at 18 months of age (Furukawa et al. 1996). The autosomal recessive Ipr gene induces massive CD3+CD4CD8- cell (double-negative T cell) proliferation. This striking proliferation of double-negative T cells is caused by a defect in the Fas antigen, which has been reported to mediate...

Oxidation and Disease an Overview

Many years ago, it was proposed that a common event could explain many of the findings we associate with diseases of various sorts, such as diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, arthritis, lupus, Alzheimer's disease, and other degenerative diseases of aging. That common event appears to be the destructive oxidation of tissues by free radicals, a process I have already described. As for the rest of us, free radicals appear to play a central role in virtually every disease you can name, either directly or secondarily. Of the diseases known to be related to free-radical injury, the best evidence exists for lupus, multiple sclerosis, all of the degenerative brain diseases (Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, olivopontocerebellar degeneration, and ALS), strokes, heart disease, arteriosclerosis, all infectious diseases (viral, fungal, mycoplasmal, and bacterial), rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, smoking-related diseases, diabetes, and all other inflammatory diseases....

Chronic inflammatory autoimmune diseases

There have been a number of clinical trials assessing dietary supplementation with fish oils in several chronic inflammatory diseases in humans. N-3 PUFAs in the diet could affect the course of these diseases by altering the immune or inflammatory responses, thus modifying clinical symptoms. In some of the human trials of fish oil in inflammatory disease, anti-inflammatory effects of fish oil, including decreased production of circulating concentrations of pro-inflammatory mediators (LTB4, TNF-a, IL-1 and C-reactive protein), were observed. Many of the short-term placebo-controlled, double-blind trials of fish oil in chronic inflammatory diseases (cyclosporin-induced nephrotoxicity and hypertension, lupus, nephritis, IgA nephropathy, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) reveal significant benefit, including decreased disease activity and a lowered use of anti-inflammatory drugs (Table 4.3). However, the evidence for a beneficial effect of fish oil is strongest in rheumatoid arthritis...

Stroke and Heart Attack Are They Really Inevitable

Stroke is a general term used to describe any brain injury caused when blood supply to the brain is interrupted, resulting in tissue loss and temporary or permanent impairment of function. It is the third leading cause of death in developed countries, and may result from a variety of factors, including atherosclerosis, heart disease, connective-tissue diseases (lupus, arthritis, etc.), and drug use.

Effects of Mercury on the Immune System

So why is humoral immunity important Because elevated humoral immunity coupled with T-cell malfunction leads to autoimmunity, a condition where the immune system inadvertently attacks various tissues in the body. There are numerous autoimmune disorders, including thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, primary adrenal insufficiency, and lupus. In fact, we have good evidence that at least part of the damage caused by many neurodegenerative diseases is related to autoimmune reactions to cells in the nervous system.

Excitotoxins and the Elderly

When the elderly eat foods containing excitotoxic food additives, they increase their brain levels of glutamate.267 But, what about the protection afforded by the blood-brain barrier, you say In the last decade, we have learned that one effect of aging is a gradual loss of the gatekeeper's ability to keep harmful substances out of the brain, in addition, many elderly have been exposed to one or more conditions known to impair the barrier, such as hypertension, head injuries, certain medications, diabetes, autoimmune diseases (lupus and rheumatoid arthritis), strokes, and chronic infections.

Omega Fatty Acids

One of the most interesting relationships between diet and vascular disease is the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on atherosclerosis. It was observed many years ago that Eskimos have a very low incidence of atherosclerosis, despite the fact that their traditional diet is extremely high in fats and devoid of fruits and vegetables. They also do not suffer from autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. However, when they adopt a typical Western diet, they develop all of the diseases we do, and at the same statistical rate within the population.

Vitamin C

Several nutritionists have promoted the use of very high concentrations of this vitamin, which seems to have some merit in individual cases. The real question is whether such large doses can be absorbed. Several studies have indicated that absorption from the gut is regulated, preventing uptake of extremely high doses. It may be that with certain disorders larger concentrations are allowed to pass through the intestinal barriers. As far as I am aware, no one has tested ascorbate absorption in persons with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other similar disorders. Most absorption studies have been conducted using healthy volunteers. Intravenous ascorbate can attain very high levels and appears to be helpful with serious infections such as Lyme disease.

Prevention

The long-term use of glucocorticoids (medications prescribed for a wide range of diseases, including arthritis, asthma, Crohn's disease, lupus, and diseases of the lungs, kidneys, and liver) can lead to a loss of bone density and fractures. Other forms of drug therapy that can cause bone loss include long-term treatment with certain antiseizure drugs, such as phenytoin (Dilantin) and barbiturates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogs used to treat endometriosis excessive use of aluminum-containing antacids certain cancer treatments and excessive thyroid hormone. It is important to discuss the use of these drugs with your physician and not to stop or alter medication doses on your own.
