Treatment of dry eyes and a dry mouth is essentially symptomatic, with tear and saliva substitutes, and in the case of a dry mouth, an emphasis on dental and oral hygiene and early detection and treatment of infections. Some benefit has been claimed from the use of bromhexine and evening primrose oil, but this has not been validated by extensive clinical trials. More recently attention has turned to disease-modifying drugs and several studies have suggested benefit from treatment with hydroxychloroquine. Corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs are indicated in some patients with extraglandular disease.
