Specific TCV has been used clinically in patients suffering from relapsing multiple sclerosis. The vaccines were prepared using autologous clones of attenuated T cells responsive to MBP. Similar to the results in experimental models, the patients with multiple sclerosis were found to develop anti-idiotypic T cells whose appearance was associated with a sharp decline in the frequency of anti-MBP T cells in the peripheral blood, as detected by T cell proliferation. More patients and more time will be required to learn whether TCV can influence the long-term course of disease. In any case, the immunology of TCV staged in experimental animals is reflected in clinical trials of TCV in natural human disease.
