Synovial fluid from patients with rheumatoid arthritis has been shown to have an enhancing influence in assays of chemiluminescence.22 Chemiluminescence of peripheral blood neutrophils is usually increased in patients with active rheumatic autoimmune disorders, including rheumatic arthritis,23 SLE,24 and progressive systemic sclerosis.24,25
Chemiluminescence can be utilized to measure phagocytosis indirectly. Animal studies have demonstrated enhanced chemiluminescence in host granulocytes during bacterial diseases.26 Viral infections in animals and humans do not enhance and often depress the oxidative burst of PMN;
