Some early studies seemed to indicate omega-3 fatty acids had a protective effect against heart attacks and strokes, but different studies produced conflicting results. One baby in three thousand to four thousand births is born with neurofibromatosis, an autosomal dominant disease caused by mutation in a tumor suppressor gene that helps regulate cell division and cell-cell contacts. A truncated version of the tumor suppression protein, neurofibromin (NF I) is implicated in the disease. This mutant protein can come from missense or nonsense mutations, or from reading-frame shifts after a repetitive element called Alu is inserted upstream of the NF I reading frame (a reading frame is the DNA that codes for proteins). Because the mutant protein is unable to regulate cell division, tumors grow on the nerves throughout the body. One of the most underdiagnosed genetic diseases is hemochromato-sis, also called iron-overload disease. This trait is recessive. The condition leads to excessive accumulation of iron and basically causes rusting of the organs. This trait appears to be much more common than previously thought, with approximately 1 in 200 to 400 individuals affected, and approximately 1 in 10 are carriers. The multitude of symptoms of this disease, from cirrhosis of the liver to cancer, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis, makes accurate diagnosis, based only on phenotype, difficult.
