Angiogenesis is a process of new blood vessel development from preexisting vasculature. It plays an essential role in several physiological processes (e.g., embryonic development, normal growth of tissues, wound healing, and in the female reproductive cycle) as well as a major role in many diseases (tumor growth and metastasis spread, cutaneous affections, ophthalmic disorders, and ischemic diseases) depending on its level of expression ( ). This process is mediated by several angiogenic growth factors such as acidic and basic fibroblast growth factors, TNF-a, angiogenin, and VEGF.70,71
