I receive many letters, phone calls and questions in my classes from people about specific problems. They might suffer from asthma and ask, "Can Spring Forest Qigong help with my asthma?" Can it help with arthritis, with cancer, with back pain, with depression, or with some other problem? My answer is always the same, "Yes, it can." Many of these people have tried many different medicines or other therapies without getting the benefit they hoped for. So, when they try Spring Forest Qigong and it works for them, they often think it's a miracle.
Many people wonder how this can be possible. How can Qigong help with all these different problems? Especially for people raised in the Western world, it is easy to understand why they have these questions. Western medicine is wonderful medicine but it usually focuses only on the specific problem. Western medicine treats symptoms or syndromes. The Qigong approach to health is entirely different.
If you have a headache, for example, and you take a pill, it may help the symptoms go away for awhile but it does not deal with the source of the problem. What is causing the headaches? It could be allergies. It could be stress. It could be a pinched nerve. It could be many things or a combination of things.
Rather than focusing on each one of these things individually and independently, Qigong focuses on all of them at once. Qigong focuses on the source or sources of the problem not the symptoms. With Qigong you don't have to identify the specific source because whatever the source, it is a form of energy and in Qigong you balance all the energy in the body, not just some.
Let me share with you the story of one of my students. Several years ago a young woman named Stacy came to see me because she had breast tumors. The tumors were benign and were removed by surgery but kept coming back. Doctors could only offer more surgery. She was skeptical about Qigong but decided to give it a try.
Within a few weeks, Stacy's latest tumor was gone. She has never had another and it has been six years now since Stacy first began practicing Spring Forest Qigong. Stacy also suffered from migraine headaches and severe allergies. She never told me about these but to her amazement she stopped getting migraines and she no longer suffers from allergies. By removing the energy blockages in her body, balancing her energy and keeping it flowing smoothly, all of Stacy's separate problems were addressed at the same time. This is how Qigong works. You can read more about Stacy's experiences, in her own words, on page 212 of this book.
While Western medicine viewed each of Stacy's problems as separate issues, in Qigong we are dealing with the whole person; the body, mind, emotions and spirit as one interconnected and interdependent being. In practicing Qigong you are removing all of the energy blockages in the body and balancing all of the body's energy at the same time. In this way you are treating not just a specific problem or symptom but your whole body, mind, emotions and spirit - the whole person.
It is very common for people to come to learn Spring Forest Qigong because of one major concern only to find that other problems get better or go away as well. It is my hope that this book will give you a better understanding of why and how Qigong works so that you may have this wonderful experience yourself and go on to share it with others.
