Clinical and Pathological Criteria

Clinical signs of visna are gradual weight loss and gradual weakening of the hind legs followed by ataxia. These signs progress slowly during a period of months to cachexia and paralysis of the hindlimbs. Rarely, forelimbs are also involved in the paralytic syndrome. Signs of maedi are characterized by weight loss, labored breathing, a dry cough and inability to keep up with the rest of the flock. Both of these diseases occur in adult animals, 2-3 years old, and the disease syndromes last 6-8 months. Arthritis synovitis also occurs in some sheep and is the hallmark of the infection in goats. Similar to visna-maedi, this disease appears in adult life of the animals. Clinically, signs of swelling of the carpal joints ('knees') appear first and this progresses to arthritis and eventual lameness. How Can Rheumatic Illness Affect the Pregnancy

Prepatellar bursitis Bursas are small, flat sacs that develop where friction is likely to occur. They are lined by synovial cells that secrete a small amount of fluid into the sac that then allows free movement between the body parts on either side of it. Bursas just beneath the skin such as the prepatellar bursa actually develop after birth. This bursa lies between the skin and the lower half of the patella or kneecap, an area where there would be considerable friction during crawling or kneeling. When the prepatellar bursa becomes inflamed, it fills with fluid and can be seen to bulge in front of the knee. There may be warmth and redness and kneeling becomes very painful.

Rats that are oophorectomized at 3 months after birth, and allowed to age for 3-6 months, develop severe osteopenia.49 These animals provide a useful model of established osteoporosis. This model is particularly useful to evaluate anabolic therapies. Large increases in bone density, bone architecture, and bone strength can be produced in these rats with PTH treatment. Clinical Clues to Diagnosis of Anaerobic Infections

The source of bacteria involved in most of the anaerobic infections is the normal indigenous flora of an individual. The mucous surfaces of the child becomes colonized with aerobic and anaerobic flora within a short time after birth (3,4). Anaerobic bacteria are the most common residents of the skin and mucous membrane surfaces (5) and outnumber aerobic bacteria in the normal oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract at a ratio of 10 1 and 1000 1, respectively (6). Examples of these mucous and skin surfaces are the oral, and nasal cavities, the gastrointestinal lumen and the conjunctiva, the skin surfaces of different locations, and the sebaceous glands. It is not surprising, therefore, that a large proportion of anaerobic bacteria that are part of the normal mucous membrane flora can be recovered from infection in proximity to these sites.

Phlebitis (a disease of thrombi, or blood clots) begins as an inflammation in a vein, usually a vein in the legs. This inflammation may destroy the smaller capillaries or a larger vein, or it may migrate and lodge in the lungs or heart, causing heart failure or obstructing the vein completely. Vitamin C is believed to be able to maintain the wall strength of the veins and arteries, keeping them elastic and repairing weak spots where fibrinogen (a blood protein) might snag and begin building up into a clot. Dr. Constance Leslie of England has run a series of tests administering approximately 250 milligrams of vitamin C daily to thrombi patients with very successful results.

Most patients with significant levels of antiphos-pholipid antibodies who have not had a complication take low-dose aspirin to decrease their chances of developing a clot. Patients who have had a thrombosis are very likely to have further problems. Most patients with the antiphospholipid antibody syndrome who have had one thrombosis are therefore treated with a drug to prevent blood clots forming (anticoagulant). Warfarin is the usual drug used and this is taken for a long time, sometimes life. The dose of warfarin needs to be taken at the higher end of the usual dose range to be effective. If there is a contraindication to treatment with warfarin, then low-dose aspirin, which prevents platelets from aggregating, is used, but it is not as effective as full anticoagulation with warfarin. Bursitis Bursas are formed where there is significant movement between tissues. They consist of a fibrous envelope lined with fat cells and synovial cells that secrete a thin film of collagen-rich fluid. This allows the tissues on either side of the bursa to move freely with minimal friction. Bursas between deep tissues are formed before birth, but many bursas just under the skin are formed after birth in response to the friction at those areas. These areas include over the elbow, heel, around the big toe, and in certain areas over the spine. Deep bursas exist at most sites where tendons run over bone or cross a joint.
